Short Bio:
George Vernikos holds a PhD from the University of Cambridge and The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute. As a student at the University of Cambridge he was also a Cambridge European Trust Fellow and member of the Cambridge University Canoe Club. Before that, he was member of the Biophysics and Bioinformatics Group at the University of Athens. Prior to his registration at the University of Athens he was studying Mechatronics in the Applied Mechanics Laboratory, at the Technical University of Crete. He is currently working as a Senior Software Engineer in a private owned company, Qualco SA, located in Athens while continuing his collaboration with research groups at The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute.
He is reviewer for the following journals: Bioinformatics, Nucleic Acids Research and Molecular Biology and Evolution. He is the author of two stand-alone bioinformatics softwares: GeneViTo (http://bioinformatics.biol.uoa.gr/GENEVITO) and alien_hunter (http://www.sanger.ac.uk/resources/software/alien_hunter/).
He is particularly interested in Machine Learning and Microbial Evolution.
