Short Bio:
Elias S. Manolakos holds a Diploma in Electrical Engineering from the National Technical University of Athens, M.Sc. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, USA, and Ph.D. in Computer Engineering from the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, USA. He is currently an Professor with the Department of Informatics and Telecommunications University of Athens, where he directs the interdisciplinary Graduate Program "Information Technologies in Medicine and Biology”. Before returning to Greece (2004) he has been an assistant and associate Professor with tenure at Northeastern University in Boston, where for three years (1996-1999) he has served as the Director of the internationally renowned Communications and Digital Signal Processing (CDSP), Center for Research and Graduate Studies. In addition, he was a visiting professor (on sabbatical leave) at the MIT Center for Biological and Computational Learning, Boston (1999). His broad research interests include the design of high performance digital signal processing systems, multi-processing embedded systems, sensor networks, as well as predictive modeling and machine learning techniques, and their applications in the interdisciplinary areas of computational systems biology and ecological modeling. He has published with his students over 120 papers in international journals and refereed Conference proceedings. Elias has led or participated in more than twenty research projects supported by research funding agencies in the U.S. (NSF, EPA, etc.), the European Commission (FP6, FP7, AAL) and Greece (GSRT). In 1992 Elias has received the NSF Research Initiation Award. He has been elected and served two consecutive three-year terms in the International Technical Committee IEEE Design and Implementation of Signal Processing Systems (IEEE-DISPS). He is also a member of the Advisory Board of the International Technical Committee for IEEE Machine Learning for Signal Processing (IEEE-MLSP). He has been invited to serve as Editorial Board member (Associate Editor) of several prestigious scientific journals (IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing, IEEE Transactions on Neural Networks, IEEE Signal Processing Letters, IEEE Computing in Science and Engineering, Journal of Signal Processing Systems, Springer etc.) and chairman of the technical program committee and organizer of several IEEE Conferences. Elias S. Manolakos has been elected Senior Member of the IEEE since 1995.
