Short Bio:
Katia Karalis, was born in 1962 and graduated from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Athens in 1986. After graduating from the medical school she continued her post-doctoral training in the U.S.A., at the University of California Los Angeles-Cedars Sinai Medical Center, National Institutes of Health (NIH) and Children's Hospital, Harvard Medical School (HMS), Boston. She completed the Clinical Molecular Genetics and Cytogenetics in Genetics Training Program of Harvard Medical School where she has also been an HMS Instructor in Medicine, and then an Assistant Professor in Pediatrics since 1994. In 2003 she was appointed Investigator Level II (Associate Professor Level) and Director of the Department of Developmental Biology, of the Biomedical Research Foundation of the Academy of Athens (BRFAA). In parallel with her research she is also teaching in several postgraduate courses at the University of Athens, Departments of Biology, Informatics and Telecommunications, and Medical School, as well as in graduate programs organized by other universities in the country.
Her research focuses on understanding the role of stressful stimuli in the development and pathophysiology of inflammatory diseases and is based on in vitro cellular and in vivo studies using transgenic animal models. The ultimate goal is to identify biomarkers for application to human diseases and possible development of new therapeutic approaches for diseases such as obesity and metabolic syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease. Her research has been funded by government agencies and other organizations around thw world, such as NIH, EU, Lalor Foundation, CCFA, March of Dimes, GSRT and pharmaceutical companies.
